Grand Gueule Paddle July 2013
We put our boats in Bayou Ami along the bank next to the Levee Road between Coteau Holmes and Lake Fausse Point State Park. This is the first time I have seen bank fishermen here, a couple of young boys and their dad. They were really nice about us disturbing their fishing spot and having them move so we could carry our boats past them. They had caught a couple of gaspergou (freshwater drum) and said they threw them back in. I asked him if he ever made garfish balls (ground garfish, ground potato with lots of vegetable seasoning, rolled ...
Two O’Clock Bayou Father’s Day Paddle June 2013
We pulled into Two O'Clock Bayou in the late afternoon on a beautiful June day. Launching our crafts, we moved into the Bayou and began our adventure. Moving the boats down the bayou, we easily paddled through the silent waters reaching the edge of a large pit where we were able to observe the flowering lily’s which were swaying languidly in the breeze, some of which had pads that were easily 3’ across. Backing away from our watery perch at the edge of the pit, we continued to move into the depths of the Atchafalaya Basin, and we began to see ...

Waterfall Hike Level 1 June 2013 Trip Report
We were to meet at Pack & Paddle at 8 but by 7:40 most of those meeting in Lafayette were already there. Once we arrived at Clark Creek Natural Area, we looked around for the folks we were meeting there. Hmmm…one group was there but a group of 5 was missing. We got one of the missing 5 on their cell, said they were climbing a hill and were already with the group. Jon, a new guide who was helping on this trip, made the call. He told them that they were NOT with the Pack & Paddle group and to please ...
Kayaking 102 Class June 2013
Cynthia, Tom, and Jan enjoyed a cool morning start in a sun-warmed pool for their 102 kayaking class. Cynthia and Tom both have sit-on-top kayaks and wanted to learn more about how they can do self and assisted rescues. Jan was interested in learning similar rescues for sit-inside kayaks. We started with sit-on-top rescues. The students learned that it is important to kick your legs so that your body is horizontally in the water at the surface, before you pull yourself onto the kayak. We continued with the assisted rescue for two sit-in kayaks: the T-rescue, in which you drain one ...
LA Hwy 1 Kayak Fishing Trip Report May 2013
The May 18th Mothershipping trip was a great success! We all met at the boat landing for an early departure and were off to the Pointe Aux Chenes marsh just as the sun was breaking the horizon. As we got to a large pond that could easily accommodate everyone and still allow us to stay in the line of sight of others, we launched the kayaks into the shallow grassy ponds and anchored the mothership in search of redfish. Everyone was throwing gold spoons and spinner baits in the grassy redfish habitat, and it wasn’t long before the first redfish ...

Marsh Dog
Here at Pack & Paddle, we LOVE dogs! We also love Louisiana's wetlands. These delicious dog treats from Marsh Dog help save Louisiana's marshes by significantly reducing the population of Nutria that is literally devouring our wetlands. That's a WIN-WIN in our eyes. In Louisiana, there are multiple causes for land loss and invasive species like Nutria are a huge factor. According to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Nutria have gnawed through an estimated 80,000 acres of marshes since arriving seven decades ago. When Nutria eat marsh, they destroy the very infrastructure that holds wetlands together putting the entire ...
