Waterfall Hike Level 1 – Clark Creek Natural Area – Trip Report
On Sunday, September 23, 2012, we set out from Pack & Paddle for a day hike in Clark Creek Natural Area. The weather had been cool the week prior to the hike, and we were secretly hoping that the trend would hold up. For such a short 2 hour “all-highway” drive East, the trail is remarkably rugged and scenic in some areas, and occasionally reminds the day hiker of the deep back-country foliage of northern Georgia or perhaps Tennessee. In any event, the group hit the trail at approximately 10:00, ready for an apparent warm day. The initial mile is deceptively all down ...
Full Moon Report – Full Butterfly Blast Moon
The Full Moon Report is written by our good friend Jim "Possum" Foret. Enjoy everyone... Full Butterfly Blast Moon Saturday (full moon rises 6:15 as sun sets @6:45) Happy autumnal equinox y’all. I nearly let it pass, I knew it was there and it almost slipped away unannounced. A good buddy refused to let it happen and reminded me. Once the cat was out of the bag I made a point of telling all of my 160+ students. Sadly very few know much about the natural world. Y’all, so much work to do and so little time, I so wish I ...
Virgin Cypress Paddle – September 16, 2012 – Trip Report
If these paddlers were not experienced before this trip, they are now. The day started out beautiful, mostly clear skies with just a little wind. Looked like it was going to be a beautiful day. The radar looked good with only a very small percentage of rain. We carpooled to Grand Avoyelles Cove boat dock just south of Lake Fausse Point. We usually put our boats in on the northeast side of the lake, along the levee but since there was a slight south wind, I decided to put in on southeast side so we wouldn't be pushed up against the cypress tress as the ...
Howl at the Moon Trip Report – August 31, 2012
It was a windy day on Lake Martin. We checked the wind direction heading out so we would have a harder paddle out and an easier paddle back in. We maneuvered through the cypress and tupelo trees, crossing logs that would sink beneath us as we skid across them. Just when we reach, what I consider one of the most beautiful areas of the lake, we found out that one of our group had arachnophobia. Not the kind that makes you scream and tell your partner to get it out but the kind that makes you scream and almost walk ...
Kayak Anglers Choice Award
Yesterday I was clicking through the YakAnglers Choice Award survey to vote for our friend Ben Roussell's blog. I was surprised to see that Pack & Paddle was nominated in the Kayak Angling Retailer/Outfitter category. Louisiana is well represented with not only us being nominated, but also the Bayou Coast Kayak Fishing Club forum, Point Aux Chenes as a fishing location and Ben Roussell for his excellent blog. Please vote for us by going to: http://www.yakangler.com/choice Voting ends on October 10th - but why wait? It takes only a minute or two so please do it now! When doing this ...

Pointe Aux Chenes – Free Group Trip August 25, 2012
Here's the story: There weren't many sleepy eyes at 4am in the Albertson's parking lot as 16 fishermen and women gathered. We were headed way down the bayou south of Houma to Pointe Aux Chenes. After a quick meeting to go over driving directions and to hand out maps of our fishing location, we were rolling to this special piece of the Louisiana marsh. A wide variety of fishing craft were on hand from Hobie Pro Anglers to Native Ultimates, Wilderness Systems Rides, NuCanoe Frontiers and many more. Part of our group headed against the incoming tide southward towards some ...
A New Event Is Born!
Offering a new event to all of you can be a little stressful - especially when it's a little out of the ordinary. I had this feeling over the last few weeks struggling on whether to add our new Hands-On Camping and Hiking Demo. I wanted this event to signal the kick-off to our best hiking and camping season in Acadiana - November through May. My idea was to give folks a chance to lie in some tents, try out some trekking poles, and basically get their hands on a bunch of new gear. I just wasn't sure it was ...

How can you help? Pack & Paddle is ...
Lake Martin Sunrise Paddle – Aug 12th Trip Report
A couple of things were unexpected about this trip, 1) there were 18 people willing to wake up at least by 5:30am to be at Pack and Paddle for 6am, 2) every participant arrived at Pack & Paddle before 6am. This never happens, there are always people arriving later than the departure time. I am now considering a time change for all of the trips that I do, maybe we’ll leave at 5am or 4am from now on. HA! So as everyone signed the waiver, I gave some canoe instruction in the parking lot so we could jump in the water ...
