Bayou Teche Kayak Paddle – July 7, 2012

There was a threat of rain this morning but it looked as though it was going to clear up early enough for us to take on this 15 mile paddle. When we arrived at Arnaudville landing the weather was absolutely beautiful. We dropped all the kayaks then all of the drivers drove to Breaux Bridge to our take-out point.

When we arrived in Breaux Bridge, the weather was not so good. Actually, it was raining pretty dang hard.  I called Rachel at Pack & Paddle, she looked up the weather as the drivers convened to look at the weather on iPhones. The decision was made by all paddlers to go for it, the weather looked as if it was going to clear nicely.  We headed back to Arnaudville to start the trip.

I got everyone in the water, I was the last boat, and as I pushed away from the bank there was a distant crash of thunder. Oh no… but there was none to follow so we headed down the bayou.

There is lots of land that is wonderfully overgrown along this stretch and some of the most beautiful Live Oak Trees you will ever see. There are all sorts of houses along the way as you near Cecilia and Breaux Bridge.  We had a very short drizzle of rain which helped to cool us off and the clouds gave us a reprieve from the sun. As we neared our take-out point, we once again heard distant thunder but it was too late, we had made it.

Once we stretched our legs, we headed to Café Des-Amis where we had a wonderful meal, most had chicken breast with bacon and other stuff, others had crawfish etouffee and one had shrimp etouffee. The salad was wonderful but not near as good as the bread pudding. I’m not a real big fan of bread pudding but this stuff was awesome and huge.

Thanks to everyone who made this trip, most were from Louisiana but also from Texas and California. 15 miles is a bit of a paddle but everyone did an excellent job. A great trip!
