What a great trip! With all the information in hand from Wednesday’s How-To course, we met in the Pack & Paddle parking lot early Saturday morning. We loaded up and hit the road following each other to Choupique Bayou.
By this time the sun was up, highlighting the beauty of this south Louisiana marsh. We quickly unloaded our kayaks and rigged them. A quick paddle lesson and we were fishing. Kent was the first to put a fish on ice with a nice little Red. Merlin and I headed for the marsh. Merlin set up in a spot that looked fishy and sure enough he had a bite. I paddled over to Gene and his wife Dona, while telling stories Gene hook a nice size Red. The red headed behind a grass island and soon spit the hook, that’s marsh fishing. Matt and his wife Sharon came around the corner and I offered to take them back in the marsh.
The water had fallen and turned off the bite. We turned our way to the landing to load up. Merlin and Kent were nowhere to be found, they had found some Reds and Kent had three of them over 20 inch, what a way to christen a new kayak and end our first kayak fishing trip.
Luke and I had a great time, made new fishing buddies that weekend and look forward to wetting a line with them soon.
