Becky and I were lucky enough to lead yet another wonderful Valentines evening paddle trip. Our group met at Pack & Paddle and after some short introductions, we were off to Lake Martin. We unloaded our boats with a signature Lake Martin sunset in the background.
Our trip started out with a small mishap when one couple made a splash (literally) at the put-in. Undeterred, this couple forged ahead with the paddle trip even in the chilly weather. We’re not naming names – because as you may or may not know – what happens on the Valentines paddle stays on the Valentines paddle.
The route took us west into the sunset as we watched the last of the fiery red tones fade to grey and then to black. Once we reached the back side of the lake, we stopped for a break and some couples shared stories of how they met and some of their most memorable moments together. We then crossed the still, windless inky black lake back to the launch. It was magical to see your canoe slice through the black surface of the lake.
The group arrived back at Pack & Paddle to tables set with white tablecloths, wine, lemonade and a special hot drink. Playing live music was the Gumbo Jets – a trio including Jo Vidrine, David Greely and Chris Stafford. While the Gumbo Jets played, we were treated to a very special Valentines meal.
My sister Cheryl Guilbeau was the chef for a memorable 4 course meal including an appetizer, a crawfish topped salad, Redfish Courtbillion – all topped off with a spectacular Bananas Flambe. As the meal settled and the music ended, our participants all headed on their way knowing that they had enjoyed together a very special Valentines experience.
