    Sampson’s Cove

Sampson’s Cove can be paddled as an out-and-back route from Marshfield Landing or as a challenging point-to-point 9.6 mile trip.  An added bonus to the point to point route is the short shuttle (9.4 miles each way) for your cars.  Sampson’s Cove offers the paddler a chance to see beautiful ancient cypress along a sweeping cove just northwest of Lake Fausse Pointe.  Some of these trees are 1,000 years old.  The unique line of trees that follows the arc of the cove 200-300 yards out was caused in an era where this area was dredged for boat traffic.  The result is wind protection from the south as well as the north making this one of the most dependable places to see the beautiful cypress this area has to offer.

    Conditions to consider:

From Marshfield Landing, you’ll have a 1.25 mile paddle through a canal to get out to the lake.  There are powerboats in this area – so use caution.  Water hyacinth can clog up parts of the cove, so you may need to stay out in the lake and enter the cove further north.  While in the lake – be aware that the chop can get quite rough on a south wind.

    Directions:

To reach Lake Dauterive Landing: (North end of the route)

The launch is at the end of this road.

To reach the Marshfield Landing: (South end of the route)
On your smartphone or computer, use the search term: Marshfield Road, New Iberia, LA
The launch is at the end of this road.

Please note that there is a launch fee at both landings.
