Our Sunday afternoon trip to the Forks started off well. The group met at the shop and were in high spirits. When we got to the put in in Catahoula, we were surprised to find the road blocked off and tents, trailers and people gathered there for Powerboat races. Trying to think on the move, I decided to move the trip 7 miles down the Henderson Levee to put in at McGee’s Landing. There was a recent influx of water with the Morganza Spillway being opened, but I had paddled there 2 weeks prior and it was fine. When we got to the put-in, we were surprised to find more than a few dead fish. The vegetation that had been pushed in with the new water had started to decompose and the oxygen levels got messed up. We still had a blast though. There were plenty of egrets and a few ospreys. The water was calm and we even got some shade from the clouds. Although the cypress trees aren’t as big as they used to be, it’s still awesome to be around them, paddling through forests of them, exploring. Lunch was Amy’s Santa Rosa chicken salad. (if anyone wants the recipe email me!)
I’d like to thank my group for persevering. Thanks for hanging out, lets do it again soon!
