Valentine Loop Trip Report – March 2014
The day started off gray and drizzly, and a few anxious moments were spent wondering if rain and/or inclement weather would ruin our day. However as we set out on our trek, the sky started to clear, giving us excellent hiking weather. Our team started the loop along the shore of the lake and we walked the leaf covered shore under the spreading arms of Pine and Cypress. After traversing the shore we reached the end of the lake then moved slightly uphill to a pine covered area, with smatterings of Magnolia trees. Multiple plant species abounded, however few wildflowers ...

Indian Bayou Basinkeeper Paddle Fundraiser March 2014
This paddle was a fundraiser for the Atchafalaya Basinkeeper organization. This organization spends all of their time and efforts to preserve our greatest Louisiana treasure, which is the Atchafalaya Basin. This particular paddle is one of my favorite in the swamp, actually it’s hard to have a definite favorite because it is all so beautiful for so many different reasons. You get a real taste of the swamp on this relatively short paddle, 5.86 miles according to google earth, and it is a loop which never happens. You can add a couple of miles to this path by doing the larger loop and ...
Trip Report – Howl at the Moon Paddle February 2014
Lake Martin is truly a wonderful place that never gets old, especially when you have perfect weather and a perfect sunset. We put in on time, but with the early sunset at 6:00 pm, we had to get in and get moving without delay. We got our sunset photo and started moving to the south end of the lake toward the nesting grounds. With plenty of Egrets, Cormorants, and Great Blue Herons, we also spotted an owl in flight. The cricket frogs were defining just as dark had fallen. We had made it half way around the lake before we crossed over and headed back into the ...
Morning Paddle at Lake Martin Feb 2014
You know its gonna be a good day when you start it with an early morning paddle at Lake Martin. It started a little chilly but that didn't keep us away. With a mix of kayaks, canoes and one paddle board we made our way to the south end of the lake. We meandered through the bald cypress and water tupelo until we got to the rookery boundary. We stopped here to listen to the cormorants making their gurgling sounds that reminds me of a busy distant city. I imagine it's like hovering above a city but you just can't ...
Backbone Hike Trip Report February 2014
We left Pack & Paddle just after 7am and headed north on I-49. It’s easy to remember the exit number on I-49 because it is the same number as the highway that we head west on. That is 119, highway and exit. We met under the interstate before heading to the Backbone trail in Red Dirt Wilderness in Kisatchie National Forest. This trail is about 7.5 miles long. Since we had a few cars going down there we were able to shuttle cars from the trailhead at the Caroline Dorman Trail parking lot to the trailhead parking area at the other end ...
